Cleveland Browns sign USFL star rusher Chris Odom

With training camp well underway, the Cleveland Browns made an interesting signing bringing in USFL star Chris Odom to add to the edge room.

The top of the Cleveland Browns edge room is set in stone with Myles Garrett and Jadeveon Clowney, but there are some spots open on the depth chart. After the Browns placed Stephen Weatherly on injured reserve his roster slot was quickly filled by the USFL’s defensive player of the year Chris Odom. With a lot of young guys in the room bringing in another player with some upside seemed like a no-brainer.

There’s a reason Chris Odom was even in the USFL so thinking that this will be a pro bowl signing may be a little far-fetched. However, he was able to cash in with 12.5 sacks for the Houston Gamblers and that shouldn’t be dismissed.

Odom spent time with the Atlanta Falcons, Green Bay Packers, and the Washington Commanders after being undrafted out of Arkansas State. He’s 27 years old and stands 6-foot-4 weighing 256 pounds. He has good strength and burst off the line of scrimmage and also made some special teams plays for Houston including blocking a field goal that would get returned for a touchdown.

When rushing the passer you see Odom go after the football, not just the sack, causing fumbles and incomplete passes along the way. You can tell when watching his tape he truly is going after the quarterback to force a turnover making some really impressive plays this year.

Time will tell if he can continue this in the NFL but this is a really interesting signing with tons of upside potential.

With Weatherly on IR Odom has a great shot to make the roster with the Browns’ first preseason game just a few days away.
