Former Browns Player No. 2: J.C. Tretter

The President of the NFL Player Association is still looking for a new home after the first week and a half of camps being open. J.C. Tretter is 31-years old and surely has a hefty amount of gas left in the proverbial tank.

Tretter began his career when he was drafted in the fourth round of the 2013 NFL Draft by the Green Bay Packers out of Cornell. Shout out, Andy Bernard. AYO!

He spent the first three seasons with the Cheese Heads before heading to Cleveland in free agency, where he would spend the last five seasons. He started in all 80 games he was eligible for and did not miss a single snap of the 5,302 snaps he took.

He turned out to be one of the premiere centers in the entire league and that will help his chances of landing with a new team. The only thing that hurts Tretter in this process is the fact that he doesn’t usually practice, and with camps being opening for the past nearly two weeks, he is already behind in learning a new system and quarterback.

The Minnesota Vikings were rumored to be on Tretter’s list of preferred teams, but the team was not reciprocating the same feeling, according to t Phil Mackey of SKOR North.

"“The problem with Tretter is he’s got banged-up knees and he barely practiced last season with the Browns. He doesn’t really miss games, but he barely practiced. Kwesi was with the Browns, if anybody knows Tretter, it’s Kwesi. I have been told its crickets on that front,” Mackey said."

The not practicing thing is something Tretter helped generate around the league as the NFLPA president. He was a big advocate for practicing less in order to help save his body from taking all those hits and was also a big proprietor of the NFL getting rid of their discipline on smoking marijuana. Where he and the rest of the NFLPA ultimately failed is allowing the NFL to have all the power on any disciplinary appeal, something that clearly affects the Browns and Deshaun Watson.

With the Tampa Bay Buccaneers potentially losing starting center Ryan Jensen for at least a couple of months, if not the entire season due to a knee injury, Tretter makes a lot of sense to bring in. On Wednesday afternoon, Jensen’s backup, Robert Hainsey, was carted off the field, but Jeff Darlington of ESPN reported that it was just cramps due to the heat.

The only snag on Tretter potentially going from snapping the ball to Baker Mayfield to snapping the ball to Tom Brady is that he does not practice. Brady is all about getting reps and he will need all the reps he can get as he has three new interior offensive linemen. Tretter would have to be willing to follow the GOAT’s lead.
