4 Cleveland Browns rookies that stood out in win over Jaguars
By John Suchan
No. 2: D’ Anthony Bell, S
An undrafted rookie from the University of Western Florida, D’Anthony Bell came to play in the opener against the Jags. The safety seemed to be everywhere in this game. He had three tackles and capped off his night by punching the ball out of Luke Farrell’s hands, forcing a turnover.
Bell had a very successful career in college but having come from a small program he went undrafted, but still, the NFL didn’t seem too big for him on Friday.
When you look back at his collegiete career and project what he’ll do in the NFL you can describe Bell in one word and that’s “versatile.” When he was at UWF, in his junior season he had 77 tackles, two interceptions, nine pass breakups, and four fumble recoveries.
Before UWF, he played his sophomore season at community college powerhouse Butler CC in Kansas where he dominated finishing with 57, tackles and three picks including one he ran back for a touchdown. Going back to his freshman season at. Iowa Central CC in addition to the defensive dominance, he also was running back kicks and punts.
He certainly stood out in his first NFL game with hard-nosed tackling and a knack for finding the ball. The team has veterans John Johnson III and Ronnie Harrison Jr, along with Grant Delpit and second-year player Richard LeCounte back there in the safety positions on the defense. Bell certainly did a lot in this first preseason game to be in the discussion to have him on the 53-man roster for Week 1.
