4 Browns defensive players that shined in preseason opener
Defensive Standout No. 1: Martin Emerson
Welcome to the NFL, Martin Emerson. The Browns puzzled a large portion of their fanbase, as well as the media who cover the team when they traded back to select Emerson with their first pick of the 2022 NFL draft. In all fairness to Emerson, the shock came more from the position they selected rather than the player they chose.
Emerson’s debut has to be viewed as a rousing success. The rookie came out running with the ones and looked like he belonged from the starting whistle. While Emerson gave up a long completion on the Jaguars’ first drive, the rookie was in good position but just failed to get his head around to the ball. That’s definitely something he corrected as the game progressed.
After Jacksonville moved to their second offensive unit, Emerson became a man amongst boys. He was jamming receivers at the line and blanketing them. Late in the first half, Emerson displayed the physicality that made him the Browns first selection in the draft.
The Jaguars ran an in-route at the sticks, and the ball was thrown to the spot. Even though the receiver was able to get his hands on the ball, Emerson, who was in press-man coverage, was able to get his hands on the ball as well. He ripped the ball away and took it back 76-yards for a touchdown.

Emerson’s length is going to provide some issues for opposing quarterbacks and wide receivers. He might possibly be the longest 6-foot-2 cornerback I have ever seen. When Denzel Ward makes his return, the Browns will have some decisions to make on what Emerson’s role on this team will be.
But make no mistake, Emerson will definitely have a role on this team. Don’t be surprised if the rookie ends the season as the Browns second cornerback.
