3 Dream trades that could make Cleveland Browns Super Bowl contenders
By Randy Gurzi
1. Daron Payne, DT
If there’s one position on the Browns roster that has people worried, it has to be defensive tackle. Right now, it appears they will start Taven Bryan and Jordan Elliott — who looks to be in great shape — but neither has really proven to be a huge difference maker.
They do have Perrion Winfrey and Tommy Togiai as well, but each of them was a fourth-round pick for a reason. Winfrey has more upside but he’s also known more for his ability to get after the quarterback than for shutting down the run.
That’s why it would make sense to go after Daron Payne, who is a well-rounded defensive tackle who has already had a lot of success in the NFL.
A product of Alabama, Payne stands in at an impressive 6-foot-3 and 320-pounds. He was the No. 13 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft and has never recorded fewer than 54 tackles in a season for Washington. Overall, he has 227 tackles with 14.5 sacks and has also knocked down four passes while forcing four fumbles.
Payne would be an ideal player to line up next to Bryan — or Winfrey — as he can shut down the run but is also capable of getting after the quarterback.
His name has been mentioned as a trade piece for Washington and while nothing has come to fruition, he’s someone Cleveland could truly benefit from adding — even if the price might be steep.
