3 Browns who could secure a roster spot in Preseason Week 2
By Randy Gurzi
1. Josh Dobbs, Quarterback
Some might say Josh Dobbs was already going to make the 53-man roster but there was no guarantee of that. With the status of Deshaun Watson up in the air, rumors have been flying about the Browns adding another quarterback — with Jimmy Garoppolo being mentioned often as a perfect fit.
Should someone such as Garoppolo join the team, he would battle Jacoby Brissett for the No. 1 job and that might be all they needed.
Cleveland also recently added Josh Rosen, a former No. 10 overall pick and while Dobbs was ahead of him on the depth chart, there’s always a chance someone with the talent Rosen possesses could catch fire and push him out of a job.
Of course, should Dobbs play as well as he did Friday, all of that would be a moot point.
After taking over for Watson, and facing a 13-0 deficit, Dobbs calmly helped his team take a lead and keep it. He finished with 108 yards passing, nine yards rushing, and had one touchdown as well.
Dobbs did exactly what a backup is supposed to do, which is make the right reads and keep the ball secure.
He’s not a perfect player but he’s incredibly smart, fits the system well, and has the respect of his teammates. One more impressive outing and he should also have his spot locked down, with no more questions about the depth behind Brissett.
