Following their preseason Week 2 game against the Philadelphia Eagles, the favorites to make the 53-man roster is becoming clearer for the Cleveland Browns

NFL teams have to cut their roosters down from 85 to 80 on Tuesday, Aug. 23. Then one week later, they have to do it again, trimming it to 53 by 4:00 pm on Aug. 30. For the Cleveland Browns, the decisions won’t be easy since they’ve built some quality depth.

But with two preseason games behind us now, we can try and predict what the roster will look like when Week 1 comes around.

Quarterback (2):

Jacoby Brissett
Joshua Dobbs

We have yet to see Jacoby Brissett play in the preseason and might have to wait until the Browns head to Charlotte in Week 1 to see him under center. The coaching staff feels they got enough work in their joint practices with Philadelphia and are now letting the backups get some work in — and Joshua Dobbs is taking full advantage.

He’s put together two solid games in a row and had the play of the day against the Eagles on Sunday when he took off for a 36-yard run after getting part of his shirt ripped off.

Dobbs finished that drive with a touchdown and has now put together two solid games in a row, finishing Sunday with 141-yards passing and 47 on the ground. He’s safely entrenched as the backup to Brissett at this point.

Deshaun Watson suspended until Week 13

Running Back (5):

Nick Chubb
Kareem Hunt
D’Ernest Johnson
Jerome Ford
Johnny Stanton

Cleveland’s running back room continues to impress. They have Nick Chubb who might contend for the NFL rushing title this season and Kareem Hunt who won it as a rookie for the Chiefs in 2017. They’re a great two-headed monster and as long as Hunt — who requested a trade earlier in the offseason — is on the field, he will be a huge factor.

They have two other capable backs in D’Ernest Johnson and Jerome Ford. Johnson was solid when called upon in 2021 and Ford has shown in the preseason that he’s a shifty back that can make plays when he gets the ball.
