Browns 3 biggest storylines entering final week of preseason
No. 1: Are any of the running backs on the move?
When it comes to Cleveland’s running back room, there’s a ton of talent, but sadly they can’t all play and get significant touches. So somebody has to be the odd man out, right?
Nick Chubb, who is one of the best running backs in the NFL is a lock to make this roster, as is rookie Jerome Ford, but after that? It gets tricky depending on a few things.
First off, one of the remaining backs on the roster could be dealt at any given time. The two with the most value are Kareem Hunt and D’Ernest Johnson. Hunt is the perfect complimentary player to Chubb but did request a trade earlier this offseason as he’s seeking a new contract. The Browns didn’t give in to the request, but that doesn’t mean Berry won’t find the right deal to move him.
Johnson really raised his stock last season when he stepped in admirably for Chubb and Hunt when the duo was sidelined due to injuries. He isn’t a starter on another team just yet, but he would be a good backup to a No. 1 back. The aforementioned trade involving Johnson for Reagor would be smart, even if we as fans don’t want to see him go.
Felton is likely going to make the roster, but at what designation, running back or wide receiver? If it is running back, then either Hunt or Johnson will likely be on the move. If he is on the roster as a receiver, then the Browns could carry the remaining four into the season. Will the Browns carry a fullback on the roster this season? If so, that will complicate things as the Browns have carried three running backs and one full back in each year of the Stefanski/Berry era.
This is the most intriguing question that storyline that needs a resolution before the start of the regular season. It is hard to imagine all five of the main running backs on this roster come September 11, but it could be beneficial for the Browns with Watson out.
