Is Browns cornerback Greedy Williams on the trading block?
By Randy Gurzi
Greedy Williams was mentioned as a trade target for the Minnesota Vikings, but would the Cleveland Browns consider trading the former second-round pick?
Entering Week 1 of the 2022 season, the Cleveland Browns have one of the deeper cornerback rooms in the NFL. Denzel Ward and Greg Newsome are entrenched as the starters but they also feel Greedy Williams, A.J. Green, and rookie third-round pick Martin Emerson can contribute.
But do they feel strong enough about the players behind Williams to send him to another team? One writer said it’s worth asking for the Minnesota Vikings, who are being managed by Kwesi Adofo Mensah — a former member of the Browns front office.
Clay Vasquez from The Viking Age recently named five players Minnesota should target, and had Williams on his list. He mentions that Williams has had injury concerns, which makes him a risk, but that he believes Cleveland might consider moving him now — rather than wait for him to walk in free agency.
"“Williams has not lived up to the hype that surrounded him just three years ago, and with his rookie contract coming to an end after this season, the Browns could be even more motivated to move him before he has the chance to walk away freely.” — Vasquez, The Viking Age"
Would the Browns really move Williams?
It’s true that Williams will likely move on in 2023 once his rookie contract is done. But the question would be whether or not the Vikings would give them more for Williams now than what they could get down the road as a comp pick.
Another concern in moving Williams would be the fact that he’s not alone when it comes to durability issues. Ward and Newsome have each had their own problems staying healthy, so having a capable starter ready to step up is needed.
Cleveland does have some options to replace the depth, such as Shaun Jolly who is on the practice squad, but it would probably be more prudent for them to groom him for next season while allowing their top three corners to stay the same for one more season.
