3 Reasons Cleveland Browns will beat the Panthers in Week 1
By Greg Newland
1. Clock draining run game
In today’s game, having the best running game in the league really isn’t all that effective. Offenses are so powerful and can score so quickly, that no one has the patience to let the run game really work. And if you try too hard, you’ll likely end up losing.
However, if the Browns defense can halt the Panthers early and get a lead, the Cleveland running game will be enough to run the clock in the second half and get them out of town with a victory. Without their starting quarterback, getting a win is all that matters. I don’t care if the score is 3-0, a win is a win.
Not only do the Browns have multiple guys who can carry the load, but they also have an offensive line that should be well above average in run blocking. Losing Nick Harris and the uncertainty of if Jack Conklin will be ready for week one is concerning, but it is the next man up in this scenario.
Don’t expect things to be flashy on Sunday. You’ll see some hard-nosed defense, and a very vanilla offense as they continue to figure out their identity. Jacoby Brissett is a capable quarterback in the NFL, but there is no doubt he has some limitations.
The secondary better be ready to go, as Mayfield will want to torch the team that supposedly didn’t give him a fair shot.
