Cleveland Browns mock draft: Deep safety added to solve secondary concerns
By Randy Gurzi
Round 5: Matthew Jones, G, Ohio State
Cleveland might have the best interior line in the entire NFL with Joel Bitonio and Wyatt Teller both being maulers at guard. They also believe Nick Harris is the future at center but with him on IR, Ethan Pocic has been very good.
What they don’t really have is much depth, which is why they bring in Matthew Jones from Ohio State with their second pick in Round 5. A Brooklyn native, Jones is a healthy 6-4 and 315-pounds and is a great fit in the zone running scheme. He’s also shown he can hold his own in pass protection and gives Cleveland a valuable reserve.
Round 6: Mohamed Ibrahim, RB, Minnesota
Both Kareem Hunt and D’Ernest Johnson are set for free agency in the offseason and might look for more opportunities — or money — elsewhere. If so, Nick Chubb will still run like a madman and Jerome Ford could be a solid No. 2 back. But they will want to remain deep at the position, which is why they add Mohamed Ibrahim from Minnesota in Round 6.
For his career, Ibrahim has 3,570 yards and 41 touchdowns on the ground, which is a record for the Gophers.
Ibrahim was likely going to enter the draft last season but an injury forced him to miss all but one game. He returned for his fifth season and has been great with 567 yards and eight touchdowns. However, his age and injury history leaves him on the board and the Browns take advantage.
Round 7: Jacoby Windmon, LB, Michigan State
A transfer from UNLV, Jacoby Windham is spending his final season with the Michigan State Spartans. He has 5.5 sacks in just four games but isn’t going to be a major pass-rusher in the NFL at 6-2 and 230-pounds. Still, he can be a weapon for the Browns’ defense and knows how to make noise with the blitz.
