Defense has been an issue for the Cleveland Browns this season and safety John Johnson III is asking for more commitment from his teammates

At 2-4, the Cleveland Browns have had a rough start to the season. However, they’re still in the thick of the AFC North race since there are no teams with a winning record in their division.

As of Week 7, the Baltimore Ravens and Cincinnati Bengals are atop the North with records of 3-3. Cleveland and Pittsburgh are behind them at 2-4, which means the Browns could make a run still.

It won’t be easy given their struggles but they do face the Ravens this weekend and a victory could put them right where they need to be. In order for that to happen, their defense will have to be on top of its game and safety John Johnson III believes that starts with commitment.

Browns defense has been an issue all season

Johnson is surely preaching a similar message inside the building and it’s hard to blame him. Throughout the 2022 campaign, the Browns defense has been a complete mess.

They’ve given up several leads, including a Week 2 debacle where a 13-point lead was lost with 1:55 to go against the New York Jets. What was worse is the fact that New York had no timeouts remaining and still pulled off the upset.

As to his comment about the leaders stepping up and getting together, this was supposed to happen earlier in the year. Following their meltdown against the Jets, the defense had a players-only meeting to try and get on the same page. It appeared to work for one week as they beat the Steelers but to act as if there weren’t coverage issues in that game still would be a mistake.

Something is broken with this team and it’s hard to see how anything other than some personnel moves will make much of a difference at this point.
