Browns studs and duds: Deshaun Watson, Kevin Stefanski struggle in the cold
By Randy Gurzi
Stud: Grant Delpit, Safety
Cleveland’s first points of the game came on a touchdown run from Deshaun Watson but that doesn’t happen without Grant Delpit setting the offense up with great positioning.
Delpit was able to haul in a pass that went off Juwan Johnson’s hands and returned it to the New Orleans 30.
Cleveland then scored on a 12-yard touchdown run as Watson ran it in to go up 7-0.
Delpit wasn’t done there as he made a huge stop in the third quarter. Facing third-and-two, the Saints ran it with Alvin Kamara and Delpit fired through the line to stuff him for no gain, forcing a punt on a three-and-out. That stop was huge since the defense had just been gashed on a 10-play drive right before the half and a nine-play drive to start the third quarter.
Dud: Donovan Peoples-Jones, Wide Receiver
Cleveland was up 7-0 and forced a punt on the ensuing drive. Their offense then looked to make it an even larger lead as Amari Cooper took a short pass from Watson and gained 17 yards. Unfortunately, that play didn’t stand thanks to Donovan Peoples-Jones being called for offensive pass interference.
That made it third-and-16 and after another big play and penalty from Cooper, they were facing a third-and-11. Nick Chubb made a huge 11-yard run to keep the drive going, but it could have been much worse following the penalty.
DPJ had a shot at redemption at the end when Watson threw it to him in the corner of the end zone but he was unable to pull the ball in. It was a rough outing for Peoples-Jones, who has had a great season otherwise.
