Browns 2023 draft: Early 7-round mock aids new defensive coordinator
By Randy Gurzi
The Cleveland Browns will be adding a new defensive coordinator soon and we add more help for them in this 2023 NFL Mock Draft
With a record of 7-10, the Cleveland Browns were unable to make the postseason and are already working toward 2023.
Their main goal right now is to add a new defensive coordinator and once that’s done, they’re going to have to look at the roster and decide what moves to make. Here, we jump ahead as we offer an early 2023 NFL Mock Draft that adds talent for the new defensive coordinator to unleash.
Note: Cleveland is set for a Round 3 comp pick but that hasn’t been announced yet, so it is not included in this mock.
Round 2, Pick 43: Mike Morris, EDGE, Michigan
With their first selection, the Browns add a new defensive end in Mike Morris who will slide in and replace Jadeveon Clowney, who will be gone even with his recent attempt to apologize for his tirade. Morris is built similarly to Clowney and Myles Garrett at 6-foot-6 and 278 pounds but is also very athletic.
He primarily plays with his hand in the dirt but also stood up and rushed the passer from the two-point stance at times as well.
Morris was quiet until his final season when he had 23 tackles and 7.5 sacks. The needle is pointing up and he should continue to improve especially when lined up across from Garrett.
Round 4, Pick 107: Jordan Battle, S, Alabama
Cleveland needs help at safety with Ronnie Harrison set for free agency. There are also questions about whether or not they stick with John Johnson III after his struggles in 2022. With few options in free agency, they have to go for someone in the draft, which they do here by bringing in Jordan Battle from Alabama.
Listed at 6-foot-1 and 206 pounds, Battle is solid in deep coverage which the Browns need more than anything. He needs to be a more consistent tackler but still fills a major need.
