Browns set up to avoid repeat of 2025 special teams disaster against Jets

The Cleveland Browns will face the New York Jets on Sunday, and things didn’t go so well for Cleveland the last time the two teams played each other.

Entering Week 5 of the NFL season, the Cleveland Browns surprisingly have one of the best records in the league at 3-1. Cleveland has won three straight games, and it will be hoping to secure a fourth when the team faces the New York Jets on Sunday.

New York, unlike the Browns, hasn’t been able to exceed the lowly expectations of a perennially bad team yet. The Jets will enter Sunday’s game with a 1-3 record, so Cleveland fans are feeling confident for the first time this season.

However, New York shouldn’t be overlooked — especially since the Jets were one of the worst teams in the league last season when they defeated the Browns.

New York was able to get the win over Cleveland thanks to two special teams touchdowns. The Browns will definitely be determined to prevent that from happening this year.

Browns special teams will be locked in vs. Jets after 2025 embarrassment

Looking back to the 2025 meeting, it’s worth noting that Cleveland was also one of the worst teams in the league. The Browns entered that Week 10 game at 2-6, while New York was 1-7.

However, it was the Jets who made Cleveland look like a joke of a team.

In the first quarter of the game, New York kick returner Kene Nwangwu returned a kickoff for a 99-yard touchdown. After a quick three-and-out from the Browns, Isaiah Williams took a punt back 74 yards for another Jets touchdown. After a couple of field goals and a 42-yard receiving touchdown from Breece Hall, New York was able to hold on for a 27-20 win.

The game encapsulated Cleveland’s special teams struggles that played a big part in keeping the franchise down. That was easily a matchup that the Browns could have won, but their special teams cost them with two unacceptable plays.

The good news is that Cleveland has been much better on special teams to start the season this year. Corey Bojorquez has been punting the ball extremely well, and the coverage has been just as good.

Andre Szmyt has been automatic as a kicker, and the return game has been productive. If Cleveland’s special teams can remain consistent on Sunday, fans won’t have to worry about a repeat of last season.

With how well the Browns defense is playing, and the offense coming along, Cleveland should be able to pick up a fourth straight win if its special teams doesn’t disappoint.
