The Cleveland Browns are loaded with young talent on both sides of the ball, and that young talent led the team to a win over the Tennessee Titans in Week 7. However, rookie wide receiver Denzel Boston didn’t have a massive contribution, managing only 27 yards on three receptions.
This comes after a week where Boston only had one catch for 15 yards in Cleveland’s win over the Baltimore Ravens. Considering that Boston was the team’s best offensive player throughout training camp and the first few weeks of the season, back-to-back poor performances could be cause for concern.
However, fans shouldn’t be worried about Boston in the slightest.
Denzel Boston is close to having another big game for the Browns
In Sunday’s game against Tennessee, Boston was targeted eight times, but he and quarterback Deshaun Watson just didn’t have their usual connection. It started on the first series when a Titans cornerback cut Boston’s slant route off and intercepted the ball. Throughout the game, there were multiple times where Boston was running deep downfield with a step on the defender, but Watson overthrew him for would-be touchdowns.
If just one of those passes connected, Boston would’ve had another huge game in his young career. However, they didn’t, and those kinds of days happen sometimes. Boston still leads the team with 372 receiving yards on 20 receptions, and also has three touchdowns.
Additionally, the Browns’ offense is very much still a work in progress. Pretty much all of the weapons have had games this year where it seemed like they weren’t a factor. Whether it was KC Concepcion, who Watson just couldn’t connect with early in the year, Jerry Jeudy, who was getting limited reps before Todd Monken recognized his value, or Harold Fannin Jr., who had just one catch in consecutive games, each guy had a moment where things weren’t clicking.
That's part of the growing process of a young team that was just put together this offseason. The good news for Boston is that he’s still heavily incorporated in the offense — evidenced by his eight targets. It’s safe to assume that he will eventually start to catch most of those targets and get back to having big games.
Boston’s second-most productive game so far this year came in Week 4 against the Pittsburgh Steelers. In a close divisional game that Cleveland won 27-24, the rookie wideout had four catches for 89 yards.
Now, with the Steelers next up on the schedule, it'd be great if Boston could dominate them again and get his promising rookie season back on track.
