The Cleveland Browns drafted wide receiver KC Concepcion in the first round of this year's NFL Draft. That was pretty big news for Cleveland fans because the Browns rarely draft wide receivers that high.
Later on in the draft, the team took quarterback Taylen Green. That wasn't as big of a surprise because the team has had a long history of drafting quarterbacks, especially in later rounds.
Despite being a sixth-round pick, Green has gotten a lot of media buzz over the last two weeks, mainly because he got his first real football action in last week's preseason finale. While he didn't do anything in the game that was spectacular, he did have one play in the game that has fans talking.
On the specific play, Green scrambled around in his own end zone before sprinting straight up the gut of the defense en route to a big 30-yard gain. His big 6-foot-6 stature and long strides looked really good on the play and have the Cleveland fan base dreaming of the kid's potential.
Green's teammate, wide receiver Concepcion, recently discussed the football talents of the sixth-round pick.
"Taylen's my guy. I remember playing Taylen in college, and he about single-handedly beat us.
Taylen, he's an amazing athlete, amazing person. He is the same person every day. He comes in here smiling, laughing. I feel like he is definitely a sleeper for a lot of people."
Could Taylen Green be the Week 1 backup quarterback for the Browns?
Concepcion was referencing a game just over a year ago when his team, the Texas A&M Aggies, played Green's Arkansas Razorbacks. The Aggies prevailed, 45-42, but Green threw for three touchdowns and ran for two more, having a direct hand in 35 of Arkansas' 42 points.
"Single-handedly" almost beat them is an accurate way of describing the game.
The buzz around Green continues to grow, and it will be interesting to see if the rookie gets some opportunities this season. He could certainly be used on the football field in a variety of ways. That could include having him come into games in short-yardage situations, when the Browns could look to use his athleticism as an advantage.
Green has said he wants to play quarterback, but if he's not the No. 1 guy, he may still be able to get on the field in other ways.
That prospect certainly has his teammates, like Concepcion, and the Browns' fan base intrigued by Green's football talents.
