It's always bittersweet to watch your team's former player thrive elsewhere. The Cleveland Browns' 4-2 start may tip the scales to the sweet side of things, but Martin Emerson Jr.'s career revival with the New Orleans Saints still won't go unnoticed.
Emerson Jr. was arguably the best player on the field in the Saints' dramatic Week 6 win over the New York Giants. He came down with two interceptions and nearly pulled in a third late in the game. New Orleans would have continued its losing streak if not for the cornerback's lockdown coverage.
With Denzel Ward and Tyson Campbell still in the building, the Browns have a solid cornerback duo even after letting Emerson Jr. walk. Still, it wouldn't hurt to have another player who can take over a game on Mike Rutenberg's defense.
Martin Emerson Jr. is showing the Saints something the Browns rarely saw from him
Emerson Jr. hasn't been a mainstay in New Orleans this year by any means. Coming into Week 6, he had only logged 32 defensive snaps. He only started against the Giants because Kool-Aid McKinstry had a migraine. But after the performance he put on, he won't be exiting the starting lineup any time soon.
In 60 defensive snaps against the Giants, Emerson Jr. logged two interceptions, two pass break-ups, eight tackles, and one pressure, per PFF. When New York's quarterbacks targeted him (which they did often), they posted an NFL passer rating of just 11.7.
Emerson Jr. did actually have one two-interception game with the Browns. He got the better of Trevor Lawrence twice in a 2023 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Unfortunately, those two interceptions accounted for half of Emerson Jr.'s forced picks with the Browns. He failed to maintain the impressive start to his career, struggling in 2024 before missing the 2025 season with a torn Achilles tendon.
It's hard to blame the Browns for moving on from the young defender this offseason. They already had two capable outside cornerbacks, and with so much cap space already accounted for, they didn't have the financial flexibility to give him a new contract.
But outside of Ward and Campbell, the Browns are alarmingly thin at cornerback. Mekhi Blackmon, who was effectively signed as Emerson Jr.'s replacement, has been inconsistent when tested this year. After Emerson Jr.'s elite performance in Week 6, Browns fans may wish they still had him in the building.
