If you're not a big Spencer Fano fan, you haven't been paying attention. Unless you've been living under a rock, you may have seen at least four different angles of his practice scuffle with Jared Verse during the second full week of training camp.
Up to that point, Fano had been alternating first-team reps with Dawand Jones, but the fire Fano showed against the team's best and most relentless pass rusher was exactly what head coach Todd Monken wanted to see. Fano is now the undeniable starting blindside protector for the Cleveland Browns for 2026 and beyond.
Notably, Verse had been working with Fano after practice, helping him with his footwork and hand placement, so seeing them go at it after the whistle was a bit surprising. Of course, it was clearly just in the heat of the moment, and it's not like they don't like each other or will go to blows again.
That's why, when asked about those heated matchups and how the scuffle helped cement his grip on the starting left tackle job, the rookie out of Utah had the best possible response.
“He’s just always the same dude and then every single play he’s bringing 100 percent,” Fano said of Verse. “It’s my job to keep him off the quarterback. So I’m going to be relentless as well to make sure that that happens. Every day I have to get ready to go against the best player I’ve ever played against — every single day.”

Fano also said that knowing he'd be the starter after that minor scuffle was "awesome" and if that's what the coaching staff wanted to see, then "hell yeah." He might be all smiles and an easy-going person, but he'll fight back on the field.
Like all rookies, Fano entered the league with plenty of things to polish. He had experience on both sides of the line, but he spent the past couple of years on the right side, and some argued that his shorter arms made him better suited to play along the interior.
He's done nothing but work tirelessly since he arrived in Berea. He's staying after practice, asking questions, and making the most of Verse's vocal leadership — and unmatched physicality — to get ready for the daunting task of being a Day 1 starting tackle as a 21-year-old rookie.
Fano and Verse are getting in each other's faces, celebrating when they win a matchup, and pulling no punches when they have to get physical. It's all in good spirits, though, and will make the team better in the long run.
The Browns need much more than just good players. They need guys who care, who want to get better every single day, and who won't be pushed over. Fano is clearly keeping receipts and looking to make a statement right out of the gate.
