Report: FA Corner Perrish Cox to visit Browns Thursday

facebooktwitterreddit

The Cleveland Browns will play host to free agent cornerback Perrish Cox on Thursday according to Yahoo Sports NFL Insider Rand Getlin. The Browns appear to be in the market for cornerback depth after losing Buster Skrine to the Jets on Tuesday at the start of free agency. The Browns have been linked to several free agent corners but thus far none have materialized into a contract.

Perrish Cox (5-11, 189) is the 11th ranked free agent cornerback according to Pro Football Focus, appearing in 15 games for the San Francisco 49ers last season, including 14 starts.  Cox was originally a fifth-round pick out of Oklahoma State for the Denver Broncos in the 2010 NFL Draft. Cox started nine games for the Broncos during his rookie season, recording 54 tackles and 14 passes defended, but was waived by the Broncos a year later due to legal issues.

He followed up his relatively short stint with Denver with a two-year stint with the 49ers, but was waived midway through the 2013 season to make room on the roster. The Seattle Seahawks signed Cox after he was waived by the 49ers and proceeded to release him a day after signing (Nov 26-27) only to sign him back less than a month later (Dec 11th) and once again release him (Dec 27th).

Cox signed back with the 49ers and finished out the 2013 NFL campaign by filling in for an injured Carlos Rogers. Cox turned in his best performance as a pro during the 2014 season recording 49 tackles, 18 passes defended, and 5 interceptions.

Perrish Cox in is a long shot to be singed by this front office primary due to his long history with legal troubles dating back to his college days. If the Browns don’t sign a veteran cornerback like Cox, they’ll be relying heavily on one of the many young second-year players that the Browns drafted or signed as undrafted free agents (Justin Gilbert, K’Waun Williams, Pierre Desir, and Robert Nelson) to step-up and play opposite Pro Bowler Joe Haden.

The Browns let Buster Skrine move on for a big deal so Cox would likely come far cheaper. The fact that he is visiting Washington first means he has some leverage in negotiations, either today with the Redskins or with the Browns tomorrow.
