Daily Dawg Tags: Cleveland Browns own odd stat

facebooktwitterreddit

Spanning the virtual globe to bring you the latest news about the Cleveland Browns and the NFL – these are your Daily Dawg Tags for Friday, June 17.

Things are slowly winding down in Cleveland – other than the Cleveland Cavaliers forcing a Game 7 in the NBA Finals, of course – as we approach the official start of summer.

Much of the focus currently surrounding the Browns, as it often does, is on the quarterback position. Did Robert Griffin III do enough during Organized Team Activities to warrant enthusiasm that he will firmly take hold of the job this summer? How about Connor Shaw, who is facing long odds to make the roster? And did you realize that, among other things, the Browns are currently holding a 36-year oddity of a stat?

Here’s everything you need to know (or may have missed) about the Browns and the NFL to get your Friday off to a great start.

Cleveland Browns:

Browns are owners of an embarrassing statistic

"The Cleveland Browns brought in Robert Griffin III in an attempt to breathe life into an offense that has struggled since 1999. He can also make history if he can reach a certain amount of passing touchdowns, which is something brought up by NFL.com writer Marc Sessler."

Connor Shaw remaining optimistic in face of long odds

"Cleveland Browns quarterback Connor Shaw is ready for a training camp battle, even if the odds are against him making the team."

Joe Thomas has earned his days off

"Head coach Hue Jackson is making the smart call in allowing left tackle Joe Thomas to continue to have days off during practice."

RG3 among top training camp storylines

"Cleveland Browns quarterback Robert Griffin III will be one of the top NFL storylines heading into training camp."

For outside linebackers, it is all about strength in numbers (cleveland.com)

"The Cleveland Browns are playing the numbers game right now with their outside linebackers. They’re hoping that more bodies means more pressure on opposing quarterbacks this season."

RG3’s work in OTAs lacked a big moment (ESPN)

"The Browns were the only team in the league that reached out to Griffin to be a starter this season. They were the only team in the league to offer him with the kind of money he wound up taking. Griffin didn’t so much choose the Browns as they chose him."

NFL News:

Von Miller will not play 2016 under the franchise tag (Predominantly Orange)

"Denver Broncos pass rusher and Super Bowl 50 MVP Von Miller declared on Thursday that there’s “no chance” he will play 2016 under the franchise tag."

Ravens release Eugene Monroe, who advocated for medical marijuana (The New York Times)

"Baltimore Ravens offensive tackle Eugene Monroe was released Wednesday, several months after he had publicly called on the N.F.L. to let players use medical marijuana to treat injuries. Monroe questioned whether his advocacy might have also played a role in his release."

Eagles betting on their core players (philly.com)

"The Philadelphia Eagles could have as many as seven picks, but as of now they’ll have none in the first round – their pick belongs to the Cleveland Browns – and just two in the first three rounds. Given Howie Roseman’s spotty talent-evaluation record and the Banner-like trend of teams’ signing their most promising young players before free agency, the Eagles will have to have a lot go right to assemble an excellent supporting cast around Carson Wentz."

Rex Ryan: We’ve won the off-season (buffalonews.com)

"As the words came out of his mouth, Rex Ryan could picture the backlash. He knows this isn’t a phrase most like to hear. Winning the off-season. “That’s one of those things I shouldn’t say because they’re going to kill me anyway,” Ryan said. “But we’re on vacation so nobody’s going to read it anyway.”"
