Report: Duron Carter Leaning Toward Colts, Not Browns

The Cleveland Browns have been noted as targeting Duron Carter since before last season ended. Carter met with GM Ray Farmer a month ago and worked out with the team last Friday, according to reports. Carter has been targeted by multiple teams including the Minnesota Vikings (his father’s team), the Indianapolis Colts and the Browns.

A new report tonight has Carter leaning toward signing with the Colts once he is eligible on February 10th:

In many ways this makes a lot of sense. The Colts have an amazing young quarterback in Andrew Luck and a steady coaching scenario. The Browns fall short in both of those areas. They have no idea who their quarterback will be, the situation is both muddy and clear (New Window), and had to hire their 3rd offensive coordinator in three years.

On the other hand the Colts already have receiving weapons in T.Y. Hilton, Donte Moncrief, Dwayne Allen and Coby Fleener. There may not have enough opportunities for Carter to grow and develop. After staring in the CFL it would be surprising if Carter is okay being the 3rd, 4th or 5th option when he chooses his team.

On the Browns on the other hand he wouldn’t have that problem. Only slot receiver Andrew Hawkins is for sure returning as a top target for whoever the Browns QB is. Josh Gordon could get cut or traded, though his presence could help get coverage off of Carter in his first season. Jordan Cameron is a free agent and has had a history of concussions that could keep the Browns from re-signing him. Miles Austin was the team’s starter for most of the season and is also a free agent. Carter could get a ton of targets early in his NFL career with the Browns.

When players have options they tend to choose where they can be successful, if money is all similar. The Browns will continue to fight this battle as they continue to dig out of their history. They may choose to overpay a player like Carter, whose contract will be interesting no matter where he signs.

Do you think the Browns lose out to the Colts for the services of Duron Carter?
