No Compensatory Picks for the Browns

The NFL announced their Compensatory Picks tonight and the Cleveland Browns got none. Compensatory picks are decided by how many free agents a team loses compared to how many they sign. The picks awarded tonight were based on the 2014 off-season.

The Browns lost T.J. Ward last year but signed Karlos Dansby, Donte Whitner and Andrew Hawkins. There were other moves but those were the major ones. That is a net gain for the Browns.

Next year the Browns are currently setup to get 2 or 3 compensatory picks. Jordan Cameron, Buster Skrine and Jabaal Sheard all have left via free agency and should earn picks. Brian Hoyer and Ahtyba Rubin also signed elsewhere and could get the Browns picks.

The highest picks are given in the 3rd round. This year the New England Patriots, Kansas City Chiefs and the Cincinnati Bengals got the 3rd rounders. Five 4th round picks were awarded to the San Francisco 49ers, Denver Broncos, Seattle Seahawks, Baltimore Ravens and the Bengals again.

The Broncos, Chiefs and Seahawks lead the NFL with 4 picks and Baltimore and the Houston Texans each get 3 picks. Since compensatory picks have started in 1994, the Browns have only been awarded 6 of a the 683 that have been given out. That is the least of any team in the league.

Because of those picks the Browns “lose” 3 spots in the 4th round and additional picks in the following rounds. All and all 32 picks were awarded, 25 of them will be before the Browns 6th round picks.

Compensatory picks can’t be traded but are very valuable commodities. Next year Browns fans can expect to celebrate some additional picks around this time.
