Cleveland Browns: DPD pick ’em pool Week 5 recap and standings update
By Andrew Seibt
The Cleveland Browns lost yet again, and some brave souls even selected them in Week 5 of the Dawg Pound Daily pick ’em pool.
The Cleveland Browns remain at the bottom of the AFC North, but boy did we have a shake-up in the Dawg Pound Daily pick ’em standings this week, as Brandon Onda failed to select his picks, giving way to a new leader.
Congratulations to Steven Kubitza for seizing the opportunity and jumping into first, even though Tom and I are nipping at your heels.
Here’s the standings:
- Steven Kubitza, 49 pts (8)
- Thomas Moore, 48 pts (7)
- Andrew Seibt, 47 pts (9)
- Roger Cohen, 46 pts (7)
- Joel Cade, 45 pts (8)
- Brandon Onda, 43 pts (0)
- Derek Bryner, 41 pts (7)
- Joshua Dentler, 38 pts (1)
- Jonathan Goehring 34 pts, (8)
- Matt Stevenson, 33 pts (10*)
And then there 10…
What started as an encouraging group of 14 hopefuls, the remaining participants have separated themselves from their competition, forcing them out of contention entirely.
Brandon slipped five spots to number six, as the points separating places one through five is a mere four points. Congratulations to Matt Stevenson on the weekly lead, as he is slowly but surely moving his way back into the mix. String a couple of those together and you’re right back in the thick of it!
Surprises
This was an interesting week in the NFL from a competition standpoint. There were four games in which every person chose the same team, yet only two were correct. Everyone missed on the Steelers falling at home to the Jaguars as well as missing on the Giants over the Chargers. Not to mention the Giants losing three wide receivers to long-term ankle injuries on Sunday. If there’s a team with less pass catchers than the Browns at this point, it’s the Giants.
Everyone did correctly pick the Eagles over the Cardinals and the Patriots over the Buccaneers. Carson Wentz continued his solid play against a Cardinals team that looks older by the week. The Patriots though, did continue to let the Buccaneers get Tom Brady on the ground which always makes them look vulnerable.
I’m curious to see whether or not the “Pick the Patriots against anyone” trend will continue.
Lock Moving Forward
The Kansas City Chiefs went into Houston and won on Sunday night behind a three-touchdown game by Alex Smith. Against the Houston defense giving up less than 160 yards per game to opposing quarterbacks.
Yes, they lost J.J. Watt and Whitney Mercilus but it doesn’t take away from the dominance the Chiefs have shown in their first five games this season. Look for Kansas City to be a lock until we see otherwise.
Pick Against
The Cleveland Browns once again proved why they’re 0-5 and nowhere near an adequate football franchise. Maybe Kevin Hogan and his efficiency against a banged up Texans defense is a recipe for their first win. Maybe we’ll watch as another quarterback the Browns traded out of lights them up for yet another loss under Hue Jackson’s control.
Next: Takeaways on offense from Week 5
I picked the Browns to win last week, but every time there’s a sliver of hope they turn it over so until further notice, pick against the Factory of Sadness.
