With the word trade starting to pop up around Marcus Peters’ name, the cornerback-needy Cleveland Browns would be wise to at least make a call to the Chiefs

Anytime a player who occupies a position the Cleveland Browns are lacking in comes available, it makes sense to wonder if they should kick the tires. This situation is potentially happening right now as Cleveland finds themselves needing some talent in the secondary, primarily at cornerback and whispers are beginning to pop up around a top-flight cornerback.

Marcus Peters of the Kansas City Chiefs is entering his fourth season in the league after being selected in the first round of the 2015 NFL Draft out of  Washington. He’s since showcased what made him a Day 1 pick, but also what had him off some teams boards.

Peters has been electric with 19 interceptions in three seasons, but also proved to be hard to deal with. That was also the case coming out of Washington, as he was suspended and later released from the program for disciplinary reasons and sideline explosions.

Now in the NFL, he again has had some problems with coaches and with him needing a new contract soon, Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk explored the thought that the Chiefs could try and get something for him now, rather than lose him for nothing more than a comp pick later.

"“Peters has become one of the better cornerbacks in the NFL, but Peters has at times been a bit of a handful for the Chiefs. The situation came to a head last season, when he seemed to try to get himself ejected, then seemed to assume he was ejected when he wasn’t, then returned to the sidelines with his uniform on and socks off, showing no intent to return to action. The incident, along with an argument with a coach, got Peters suspended for a game. For the Chiefs, it quietly may have been the last straw.” — Florio"

Not only are the Browns a team to consider for being barren in the secondary, but they also have more draft stock than any team. With two first-round picks and three second-round selections, the Browns could offer something of value for Peters and still have plenty of ammunition to improve in other areas as well.

While Peters has proven to be a great player, he isn’t worth the No. 1 or No. 4 overall picks. However, the Browns should entertain any of their second round picks — with the No. 33 or No. 35 being the most enticing to a team like the Chiefs.

These selections are still close enough to the first round to make them at least consider the move, especially when considering they just acquired corners Kendall Fuller via trade and David Amerson in free agency. As for the Browns, Peters would be better than anyone they could reasonably select at that point.

Such a move would make Cleveland a stronger defense, and the Chiefs could also get more weapons to put around their new starting quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Sounds like a move that should, at a minimum, be explored.
