Does Baker Mayfield push Tyrod Taylor at all?

The Browns organization has maintained that Taylor will be the team’s starting quarterback in 2018. It seems that Mayfield has no chance to win the starting job, no matter how well he performs in August.

Mayfield has reportedly not taken any reps with the first-team since he has joined the team. But if something were to happen to Taylor before the season starts, can Mayfield take over the starting unit? Or will Drew Stanton lead the team as Mayfield continues to sit and learn?

If the Browns put everything into Taylor, they could force themselves into a bind if Taylor suffers an injury. If Mayfield needs to take over as the starting quarterback for some reason, he may not be in the best position to succeed with little to no work with the first-team units.

Taylor should be the starter for the season to not force Mayfield into not playing when he is not ready. But it may be in the best interest of the team to give Mayfield some first-team reps if the worst comes to worst before the season.

Haley has admitted that Mayfield has a long way to go before being ready to take over the offense. He has little to no chance to become the starter in training camp, but may need reps just in case the Browns’ worst-case scenario happens.
