Jermaine Whitehead, Safety

Jermaine Whitehead probably isn’t a name that jumps off the page when looking at the Browns’ current defense. Stars like Myles Garrett, cornerback Denzel Ward, and safety Damarious Randall are sure to grab the spotlight from the other pieces that may just serve to be depth on the final 53-man team. However, Whitehead’s fantastic OTAs are quickly making him into a story around the Cleveland football scene.

More from Browns News

The 26 year old journeyman is already playing for his fourth team in coming to the Browns. Previously, Whitehead has played for the Baltimore Ravens and Green Bay Packers since originally being signed by the San Francisco 49ers in 2015. The Auburn product has never been a star during his four professional years, but he quickly proved himself as a possible special teams asset for Cleveland during this year’s OTAs.

The Browns regularly graded out as one of the NFL’s worst special teams units under Amos Jones last season. Although kicker was their biggest concern, leaving Zane Gonzalez for Greg Joseph early in the season, Cleveland’s return game also left much to be desired during most games. Whitehead could be new special teams coordinator Mike Priefer’s remedy for the Browns’ special teams woes, should he continue to perform as he did during this year’s OTA period.
