5. Former Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer

Urban Meyer has been out of football for one season and he was expected to be candidate for top college jobs this offseason. Instead, he has become a rumored candidate for three jobs: Dallas, Washington, and Cleveland.

It was reported that Meyer would have a “real possibility” to be a top candidate for the Browns job if it became available because he has a good relationship with Browns ownership. Also because he is from Northeast Ohio, having the opportunity to lead the Browns may be what Meyer wants.

During his run as the Ohio State head coach, Meyer built and ran the program like an NFL program. It helped develop talent and made Ohio State a consistent top program. His coaching and development also has made Ohio State a hotbed for top NFL talent.

Meyer is also a good leader of his team and has his players buy into the program. Despite dealing with several top recruits on one roster, most of the players are satisfied with their roles. And if not, Meyer knows how to manage a locker room to get the best out of his roster.

The big question with Meyer jumping to the NFL would be if he could earn the respect of older players. Instead of coaching college kids, Meyer would have to manage a much more mature locker room that could be harder to get respect out of right away.

Meyer would also not be in complete control of what the Browns do compared to what he is used to in college. Instead of people answering to Meyer, Meyer would have to manage a much more collaborative effort with John Dorsey and the front office.

Meyer also has had several health issues that have hindered his coaching career. A brain cyst is what caused him to leave Ohio State, and it would likely affect him if he were to coach again. Meyer could be a good fit for the Browns, but the amount of questions surrounding him do not make him a top candidate for Cleveland.
