Daily Dawg Tags: Cleveland Browns show ultimate respect to Joe Thomas
By Dan Justik
The Daily Dawg Tags brings you all the Cleveland Browns news you need to know, including the organization showing the ultimate respect to Joe Thomas.
This offseason, the Cleveland Browns have ended what seemed like a never-ending search to find Joe Thomas‘ replacement at left tackle since his retirement following the 2017 season. With the selection of Jedrick Wills in the 2020 NFL Draft, the Browns appear to have found their answer.
The biggest concern about Wills is if he will be able to make the transition from playing right tackle in college to playing left tackle in the NFL. It is a tough move teams do not often have rookies make, but it is a necessary move for Cleveland. Wills will not be making the transition by himself, however, as Thomas has said he will the rookie make the transition.
Even after his retirement, Thomas remains a central figure for the Browns. He may not have a title with the organization, but he will do anything for the organization he played 11 seasons for. Because of that, the organization still holds Thomas in high regard.

Cleveland Browns News
"“First of all, I think that’s very gracious of Joe to offer that number, but I just didn’t think that was the right thing to do for a bunch of different reasons, and I told Jed that,” Stefanski said Tuesday on ESPN Cleveland radio. “The good news is I get to assign these numbers. So I made sure that he knew what numbers were available.”"
Thomas has a low-ego personality, so it was not surprising he offered his legendary No. 73 to Wills. However, it is a clear sign of respect from Kevin Stefanski and the Browns to not allow Wills to wear Thomas’ number. It may be foreshadowing a future event, as it would be extremely unsurprising to see Thomas’ No. 73 in Cleveland’s Ring of Honor in the near future.

After suffering from a deflated wide receiver free agent market, Rashard Higgins remained a free agent following the draft. However, as Steve Gessic discusses, the Browns re-signed Higgins on a hometown discount to revitalize Higgins’ chemistry with Baker Mayfield.
