Starting Safeties

Both starting safeties from 2019 are now gone and that means the Browns will have to replace them both. They’re also going to need a third player capable of starting due to Joe Woods’ reliance on the 4-2-5 defense which often uses three safeties.

Karl Joseph

Another one of Andrew Berry’s highly praised signings came when he added former Raiders safety Karl Joseph. A first-round pick out of West Virginia, Joseph is a physical player who has no fear when making a tackle.

He comes in on a one-year deal, which gives him a chance to prove he deserves a long-term contract. Joseph spent the final couple of seasons in Oakland with trade rumors circulating overhead and is ready to start a new chapter, which could benefit the Browns as they now have a very motivated veteran safety.

Grant Delpit

Grant Delpit was one of the best defensive backs in the NCAA but he played hurt for most of the 2019 campaign — which hurt his stock. He did prove that he still had what it took to be a star in the NFL as he was dominant in the team’s NCAA Championship Game — which came after he had a lot of time off to get healthy.

Cleveland landed him in the second round of the draft, and that could prove to be a huge steal. He should start from day one and could be the team’s best safety by season’s end.

Andrew Sendejo

Landing Andrew Sendejo was an underrated move by Andrew Berry. He’s not a player who jumps out when watching the tape but he’s also not one who makes many mistakes. A solid veteran, he gives them another season to groom someone such as Sheldrick Redwine and was great protection for them had they not seen someone such as Grant Delpit fall to them in the draft.
