Cleveland Browns seek revenge against Titans in Tennessee
By Josh Brown
2. Browns Offensive Line
This is arguably the biggest difference from a year ago as the Browns opened 2019 with Greg Robinson and Chris Hubbard at tackle. The issues with those two were felt right off the bat as the Titans sacked Mayfield five times, with 2.5 of them coming from 37-year-old Cameron Wake. Those would be his only sacks in nine games with the Titans. Well, that has all changed in 2020 for the Browns, thanks to new general manager Andrew Berry’s focus on improving the line.
The Browns now boast rookie sensation Jedrick Wills on the left side and high priced free agent Jack Conklin on the right side. Both of these players have exceeded expectations as pass blockers in 2020. Both Conklin and Wills are top-20 pass blockers and over the last five weeks, Wills has been top-five according to a tweet from PFF.
They have combined to allow just five sacks all season and have helped turn the Browns line into one of the best in the NFL. While those two have helped at the weakest position on offense, it was another move that has arguably made the biggest difference in 2020. Kevin Stefanski hired offensive line guru Bill Callahan to lead this group.
All Callahan has done is coach the entire line to some of the highest graded marks in their careers. He has made Wyatt Teller one of the best guards in the game. J.C. Tretter is also on top of hos game, playing better than he has in his career. The aforementioned Wills has been better than expected in year one, and veterans Joel Bitonio and Conklin have been superb in pass and run blocking this year.
Callahan has found a way to bring out the best in the entire line this season, and it has shown up in the run game especially. Mayfield is happy also as he is getting sacked at a career-low rate of 1.54 per game in 2020. The Titans beat up the Browns line in 2019. It will be a huge surprise if they do it again in 2020.
