Cleveland Browns secure the EDGE in post-first wave 7-round mock draft
By Randy Gurzi
There’s a good chance the Cleveland Browns go with a cornerback in the first round but at No. 26, some of the biggest names will be off the board. For that reason, they elected to take a defensive end and now decide to get another defensive back in Greg Newsome.
Cleveland has already reportedly shown interest in Newsome as they met with him virtually and he fits their type of cornerback. Newsome has excellent height at 6-foot-1 and long arms, much like their current starters Denzel Ward and Greedy Williams.
Of course, there are some concerns with those starters. Neither Ward nor Williams has played a full 16 games in their young careers and Williams missed all of the 2020 campaign. As a rookie, he missed the first four games of the season, which slowed his development.
Now, Williams finds himself trying to bounce back from a nerve issue in his shoulder that cost him his sophomore season. He’s been on record saying that he’s ready to play but there’s no guarantee he will be 100 percent. That’s why it’s important for the Browns to add a player early that can start should Williams not be ready to go — or if he or Ward were to miss any more time.
