Cleveland Browns: Is the injury bug already appearing?
By Greg Newland
The Cleveland Browns just can’t catch a break when it comes to injuries. Could this destroy their chances at competing for a Super Bowl?
We aren’t even halfway through training camp, and the Cleveland Browns are already dealing with injuries, especially in the secondary. It started last week when Greedy Williams left practice because of the heat and continued this week with Ronnie Harrison leaving practice with a “lower extremity” injury.
Williams leaving practice appears to be minor, but there are some questions about Harrison. Head coach, Kevin Stefanski, was extremely vague, but the speculation is he tweaked his hamstring. A hamstring may not seem like a big deal, but it seems to be one of those injuries that just lingers all year if not handled correctly.
Cleveland Browns fans continue to ask, can we catch a break? Remember, not one starting player in the secondary played a full season last year.
Williams and Grant Delpit missed the entire season, Andrew Sendejo and Karl Joseph each missed two games, Denzel Ward missed 4 games, Kevin Johnson missed 3 games, and Harrison missed 5 games.
The Browns started the season fairly limited in the secondary, to begin with, and these injuries completely decimated the defense. Coordinator, Joe Woods, had to run extremely vanilla defenses just to make sure there wasn’t a busted coverage.
Fans came into 2021 hoping the team’s luck would be different. If we could just go one season without a major injury, the Browns could likely compete for a title. At this moment, this is likely a little bit of an overreaction.
No one truly knows the extent of Harrison’s injury, and Williams appears to be fine thus far.
However, over the last two seasons, we have seen just how fragile this position group can be, and it’s hard to not prepare for the worst.
