7 potential replacements for Baker Mayfield in 2022 Draft
By Joel W. Cade
Baker Mayfield replacement No. 4: Matt Corral, Ole Miss
The quarterback most like Baker Mayfield in this draft if Matt Corral. The all-SEC quarterback’s game is eerily similar to Mayfield’s. The difference is Corral is more athletic and is a true dual threat option.
The strengths for Corral are primarily in his long and intermediate passing game. He has a strong arm and good accuracy downfield. He throws with some anticipation but prefers to see the receiver open before throwing. He throws well off platform. He processes information quickly and is efficient with the ball.
But he has the same problems as Mayfield. He is a gunslinger who throws a lot of interceptions. His footwork needs help but can be fixed. Needs to develop touch on the ball. His pocket awareness is suspect.
He could be a replacement for Baker or he could be a bust. Suffering a high ankle sprain means he may fall in the draft because he will not be able to work out at 100 percent. Nonetheless, he has the athleticism to be a roll out outside zone quarterback.
He will need some coaching but should be ready to learn on the job come week 1. Our next player will not be ready week 1, but may have the highest ceiling of all the quarterbacks in the draft.
