Kareem Hunt is one of the best running backs in the NFL — something that he proved as a rookie in 2017 when he led the NFL in rushing for the Kansas City Chiefs. But even as good as he is running the ball, he’s just as dangerous catching it out of the backfield.

The problem is, Baker Mayfield seemed far too reluctant at times to take the check-down pass. His confidence in his ability to fit the ball in tight windows helped him get where he did as a pro — but at times, he left some meat on the bones.

Looking ahead to 2022, the Browns new quarterbacks are both more cerebral. Deshaun Watson is especially willing to take what the defense gives him and has never had a problem dumping the ball off to his running backs and letting them do their job.

For instance, David Johnson had 33 receptions and Duke Johnson had 28 for the Houston Texans in 2020 while Watson was playing. Of course, he’s likely to be suspended for a huge part of 2022 — if not all of it.

The good news for Hunt is he still could see more passes come his way with Jacoby Brissett. A known game manager, Brissett last started a full season in 2019 for the Indianapolis Colts. That year, his No. 2 receiver in terms of receptions was running back Nyheim Hines, who had 44 receptions.

Hunt will continue to get chances as the second back behind Nick Chubb and could have his best season in Cleveland yet due to these changes under center.
