Do the Cleveland Browns need to consider an updated helmet?
With the rest of the NFL transitioning to a deep pallet of alternative jerseys, will you see the Cleveland Browns follow suit and create an updated helmet?
The Cleveland Browns have become the Penn State of uniforms in the NFL. There’s nothing flashy about the colors or design, but for some reason, they stand out and it still manages to be appealing even with a lack of any detail.
In fact, the Browns tried to refresh the image in 2017, and ultimately went back to the simple jersey just two seasons later. The real question now is, will the front office fall victim to following along?
College football has changed the game on the jersey landscape. Call it what you want, but the universities are spending a fortune on their image and jerseys as a recruiting tool. Now, these guys are able to earn some money on the side, but programs like Oregon, Ohio State, and many others have created alternate jerseys and clothing lines that get recruits excited.
I’m not sure that an alternate jersey is a recruiting tool in the NFL, but it is certainly a marketing ploy to create a higher demand for gear. Even the most historic programs like the Pittsburgh Steelers and New England Patriots have come out with alternate jerseys and helmets to change things up a bit.
The big news last week was now the Cincinnati Bengals are rolling out an alternate helmet. Their orange helmet with the black Bengal tiger stripes has been the centerpiece of their uniforms for two decades, and now they have introduced a white helmet with the black strip.
I’m not sure the Browns have a ton to work with because they don’t have a true logo, but I would love to see them get creative and offer an alternate helmet in the 2022 season. Brownie the Elf has been a fan favorite, yet he has gotten little traction on truly making the Sunday uniform.
There is no doubt that Jimmy Haslam is motivated to make some money back, especially after ponying up a fully guaranteed contract to Deshaun Watson this offseason.
