5 Browns players to be excited about in Preseason Week 1
By John Suchan
Player No. 4: Perrion Winfrey, Defensive Tackle
Perrion Winfrey came to town barking and hollering, excited to be a Brown and ready to go to work. He’s toned-down his emotions since that over-the-top introduction he made in his initial press conference after being drafted in the fourth round out of Oklahoma.
He had a nice career with the Sooners and is considered by many to be one of the best defensive tackles coming into the NFL — when it comes to getting after the quarterback that is.
Cleveland is looking for a few better defensive tackles this season as it’s been a weak spot for the defense. Winfrey will likely get plenty of time on the field in this first preseason game as the hope is for him to develop into an eventual starter.
We’ll have to see what type of energy he brings to the defense, but he seems to have plenty and could become a starter by Week 1 of the regular season. It all starts for him on Friday night against the Jags. The competition between the other defensive tackles will be interesting to track as the season gets started. Jordan Elliott seems like a lock at one starting defensive tackle spot, but the other defensive tackle position is likely up for grabs.
I imagine we’ll see a fired-up Winfrey and his barking might be heard all the way back here in Cleveland Friday night.
