Baker Mayfield says he didn’t make claims about his former team but Myles Garrett still plans to use those words as motivation

A conversation between Baker Mayfield and reporter Cynthia Frelund recently came to light where the former Cleveland Browns quarterback used some strong language to describe what will happen when he faces his former team in Week 1.

Not long after that, Mayfield claimed he never used those words and Frelund took to Twitter, calling it all “silly.”

Whether or not Mayfield actually said those words doesn’t matter at this point. What matters is the fact that it’s out there and some of his former teammates surely believe it — especially after he was promoting an “off the leash” shirt clearing referencing his departure from the Dawg Pound.

One such player is Myles Garrett, who said that Mayfield is a competitor that uses his fire for motivation. However, Garrett says Cleveland will do the same with what Mayfield said.

"“He uses that for fire, for motivation and I think speaking like that helps amp him up.” Garrett said via Mary Kay Cabot, “It does the same for us as well. We’ll take it and we’ll use it.”"

Baker Mayfield was electric the last time he faced an old team

Mayfield and the Carolina Panthers will host the Browns in Week 1 and this will be the first time he faces an old team in the NFL. But that doesn’t mean he’s never been in this situation before.

Back in his collegiate days, Mayfield was able to go against a former team and he was always up for the task. Originally a member of the Texas Tech Red Raiders, Mayfield lost his job to Patrick Mahomes. He then headed to Oklahoma and the two teams met three times, with Mayfield getting the win in each of those contests.

The most famous meeting was in 2016 when Mayfield had 545 yards passing and seven total touchdowns. Mahomes also had a game for the ages, but Mayfield led the Sooners to a 66-59 win as 819 total yards from Mahomes wasn’t enough to stop Mayfield in his quest for revenge.

His history is why Cleveland needs to take him seriously in Week 1. Garrett has said recently that there’s no rivalry with Mayfield, but there’s no way the quarterback in Carolina feels the same way. He’s coming at them with all he has, but thankfully, Garrett says Cleveland will do the same.
