2. Martin Emerson and the secondary

There was nothing more refreshing about the Week 3 victory than watching the Browns limit the Steelers’ offense to 3 points in the second half. Over the past couple of years, the Browns have had a defense that is loaded with talent but lacks consistency, especially in late-game situations.

Against Pittsburgh, it seemed that the defense had started to figure it out, especially on the backend. The Browns didn’t give up a single passing touchdown and limited Najee Harris to less than 60 yards on the ground. This defensive performance could not have come at a better time, with Browns defensive coordinator Joe Woods receiving a lot of backlash after the devastating 4th quarter collapse in Week 2.

The Atlanta Falcons may seem like a perfect opponent for another dominant defensive performance but don’t exhale just yet. The Browns depth could be seriously tested in their Week 4 matchup, with recent injuries to Anthony Walker Jr., Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah, and Jadeveon Clowney. Reserves such as Tony Fields II, Alex Wright, and Isaac Rochelle may be asked to step up in their place.

Additionally, the Atlanta Falcons are a team that has plenty of big-play threats, including Cordarelle Patterson, Drake London, and Kyle Pitts. It will be another test for this Browns secondary as they look to limit the big plays and play a consistent four quarters of football.

It will be on players such as Martin Emerson — who will surely be tested again — to keep rising to the occasion in order for Cleveland to secure the win.
