Browns practicing patience in defensive coordinator search
By Randy Gurzi
The Cleveland Browns are in no hurry to find their next defensive coordinator which is the right way to handle their current situation
The Cleveland Browns continue to search for their next defensive coordinator as they have an interview set up with Sean Desai on Monday. However, they’re not in much of a hurry since several of the names involved have much more going on outside of the interest from Cleveland.
While it’s true they’re wrapping up their search, they’re also not going to make a rash decision. Cleveland understood that coaches such as Brian Flores would receive a lot of attention, and he’s preparing to interview with the Arizona Cardinals for a head coaching gig.
They also have their sights set on Jim Schwartz, who has had a lot of success in the NFL but as Jared Mueller of Dawgs by Nature points out, he’s not generating interest elsewhere.
Mueller also says they would love to add Dennard Wilson to their staff even if he’s not the defensive coordinator, but he’s still a legitimate candidate.
Darkhorse contender for Browns defensive coordinator
Right now, the list of defensive coordinator candidates seems to be set. However, there’s still one more coach who could enter the mix should he come available, Brandon Staley.
Currently employed by the Los Angeles Chargers as the head coach, Staley was on the hot seat due to failing to meet expectations. That temperature increased as his team lost to the Jaguars despite having a 27-0 lead in the Wild Card Round.
Staley hasn’t been getting rave reviews as a head coach but he rose to prominence due to his defensive prowess while with the Los Angeles Rams.
Of course, the Browns can’t wait too long for the Chargers to make their decision but with plenty of time left and several qualified candidates, they’re doing the right thing with their current approach.
