In the first quarter of the Cleveland Browns’ win over the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday, there was a beautiful moment when the Ravens were facing a third-and-goal from the one-yard line. Naturally, Baltimore opted to hand the ball off to powerful running back Derrick Henry.
Instead of bulldozing his way into the end zone, Henry was quickly upended by Browns rookie safety Emmanuel McNeil-Warren, who diagnosed the play, shot the gap, and ran through Henry’s legs for a tackle for a loss. The moment easily got Browns fans on their feet as they were hyped to see a rookie defender slay the running back known as King Henry.
What made the moment even greater is that McNeil-Warren called his shot. Prior to the 2026 NFL Draft, before the safety was even a member of the Browns, he appeared on the Up & Adams show and let it be known that the person in the NFL he was most looking forward to tackling was Derrick Henry. McNeil-Warren was fully aware of Henry’s reputation for embarrassing defenders, and that’s why he wanted to take on the challenge.
The fact that the rookie safety stood on business in his first-ever defensive series against Henry should let the entire NFL know what kind of defender the Browns have: a fearless star in the making.
Rookie safety Emmanuel McNeil-Warren is quickly emerging into a playmaker on Browns defense
The big third-down stop wasn’t McNeil-Warren‘s only play on Sunday. The rookie defender finished with six total tackles, one for a loss, and one pass deflection that should’ve been an interception. McNeil-Warren jumped a route in the middle of the field so well that he was actually ahead of the ball and ended up dropping what should have been a pick six.
Already contributing in three-safety lineups, McNeil-Warren ended up stepping into a bigger role for the Browns after Grant Delpit left the game early with an injury. The defense didn’t lose a step, shutting out the Ravens after the 10 points that Cleveland gave up in Baltimore’s first two drives.
Emmanuel McNeil-Warren was a big part of that, and it’s safe to assume he will be a big part of the defense for years to come. The Browns drafted the safety in the second round of the 2026 Draft, with the 58th overall pick, and he was immediately characterized as a steal. With many draft analysts considering McNeil-Warren a first-round talent, he’s a part of Cleveland’s talented young core that’s turning the franchise around.
The fact that Emmanuel McNeil-Warren, as a rookie, isn’t afraid to call out and step to the biggest and baddest players in the league just shows how high his ceiling is.
