Not long ago, San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk wasn't keen on joining the Cleveland Browns. However, much has changed between then and now, which could've prompted him to reconsider — emphasis on the past tense.
Aiyuk's time in San Francisco has felt over for months. Signs have pointed toward the two sides going their separate ways, with 49ers general manager John Lynch practically admitting as such back in January. Then, the club's owner, Jed York, recently expressed a desire for everyone to move forward together, which is bad news for the Browns.
"I would like to see [Aiyuk] play for us," York stated at the 2026 NFL Annual Meeting (h/t NBC Sports' Matt Maiocco). "We paid him for a reason. I think he's a really good football player."
49ers owner effectively takes WR Brandon Aiyuk off the Browns' radar once more
The Browns needed Aiyuk when they were linked to him two offseasons ago and still do. Their receiver room has a legitimate claim to being the league's worst and lacks proven options beyond Jerry Jeudy. Nevertheless, York all but rained on Cleveland's parade with some decisive comments.
San Francisco allowed Aiyuk to negotiate potential contracts with prospective suitors before signing him to a four-year, $120 million deal in August 2024. The Browns were among those vying for the 2023 All-Pro's services at the time and reportedly even had "the framework of" a trade in place. Alas, Cleveland wasn't one of his "preferred destinations," so the swap fell through.
While Aiyuk didn't want to go to Cleveland then, his current status as a distressed asset might have presented the Browns with an opportunity. He hasn't suited up since suffering ACL and MCL tears midway through the 2024 campaign and has been at the center of off-field controversy. The Arizona State product has become more of a reclamation project than the difference-maker York ostensibly still sees him as.
Whether Aiyuk and the 49ers can fix their fractured relationship remains to be seen. It may be too late to undo the damage they've each done. Yet, York's apparent interest in trying is an unfortunate development for the wideout-needy Browns.
It's worth mentioning that 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan keeps talking as if Aiyuk won't be on the team, regardless of York. The mixed signals suggest there's still a sliver of hope for the Browns, if anything.
