Linebacker Carson Schwesinger is a key piece of the Cleveland Browns’ talented group of young players, but his second season in the NFL is off to a concerning start. The young linebacker has been sidelined for the majority of training camp as he works his way through an injury.
While it was understood that the injury wasn’t anything serious that would threaten Schwesinger's long-term availability for the regular season, it was hard for fans not to get concerned as the linebacker remained sidelined week after week.
Fans should be able to breathe a sigh of relief after Browns head coach Todd Monken finally talked about the linebacker’s status. Ahead of Monday’s practice, Monken explained that Schwesinger's extended absence has more to do with Cleveland being extremely cautious than it does the severity of the linebacker’s injury.
The head coach went on to say that the franchise is hoping the young linebacker will return to the practice field next week, ahead of Cleveland’s third preseason game.
Browns hoping to welcome Carson Schwesinger back soon after cautious approach
This is an update that should make everyone happy. It’s great to know that Cleveland is just being extremely cautious with Schwesinger, and not that he’s dealing with anything significant. It’s even better to know that he should be back flying around the field soon.
It only makes sense that the Browns would be cautious with Schwesinger. He has the potential to be an all-time great linebacker, so it’d be foolish to ruin that by pushing him through a minor injury in training camp. Cleveland absolutely took the right approach by letting Schwesinger take his time to get healthy and gradually work his way back on the field.
If the linebacker does ultimately return next week, like the Browns are hoping, he will still have plenty of time to ramp up and get ready for the season. Cleveland kicks off the regular season on September 13, so that’s more than enough time for Schwesinger to get up to speed.
He will be asked to lead a defense that’s taking on a new identity, and Schwesinger will also be a part of the Browns’ exciting new linebacker duo. If he can stay healthy, Carson Schwesinger should deliver another season of elite linebacker play.
