While all eyes were on Quinshon Judkins, the Cleveland Browns found another running back gem in the 2025 NFL Draft. Dylan Sampson didn't get to play much as a rookie, but the flashes were there — and they were often electric.
An improved offensive line and play-calling situation were supposed to help Judkins reach superstar status in 2026. Unfortunately, Deshaun Watson operating as Cleveland's starting quarterback may severely limit the passing game's upside, thus allowing defenses to stack the box to stop the run.
That's why Sampson has a chance to be just as impactful as Judkins in the Browns' backfield this season. His explosive pass-catching skills are better suited for Watson's game, which makes him a clear breakout candidate few are talking about following roster cutdown day.
Dylan Sampson's skill set could be exactly what Deshaun Watson needs
The Tennessee product has never been the most efficient ball-carrier, and that's unlikely to change in Year 2. That said, Sampson has the skills to turn the corner in the blink of an eye.
Watson used to be a dynamic athlete who could make plays with his legs and wasn't afraid to sling the ball downfield. He's nowhere close to that type of player now, relying more heavily on the short to intermediate passing game.
Should the Browns struggle on early downs, Sampson will be asked to do plenty of heavy lifting. He can be a weapon in third-and-long situations, as he does some of his best work on short passes caught in space.
He already gave fans a glimpse of that in the preseason, sprinting away from defenders for a 43-yard explosive play against the Chicago Bears. Watson finished the game with 126 passing yards, with a third of that coming on that easy pass to Sampson that was caught right around the line of scrimmage.
Sampson could make Watson look good more often than not, at least stat-wise. Sampson caught 33 of 40 targets for 271 yards and two touchdowns as a rookie, averaging 8.2 yards per catch compared to just 2.7 yards per carry.
Of course, Judkins will also play a big role for Todd Monken's offense. He reportedly looked fully recovered from last year's gruesome leg injury. Still, Watson will have to prove that he can beat defenses deep to lighten up the box and help Judkins find running lanes.
The Browns will need yards-after-the-catch specialists on the field with Watson leading the way. For as long as he gets the nod, that means Sampson should have plenty of opportunities to get off to the races.
