Ever since the beginning of the 21st century, the city of Cleveland has only had one superstar athlete that had the ability to grab the city’s attention: LeBron James. But that has changed now that Baker Mayfield is in town.

There was a lot of uncertainty when the Browns selected Mayfield with the first overall selection in the 2018 NFL Draft. He had a big personality that rubbed people the wrong way and there were questions about if his talent would translate to the NFL.

But in just one season, it is obvious that the Heisman-winning quarterback’s ability has already translated to success in the NFL. His play at quarterback has helped lead the Browns to potentially having a winning percentage over .500 for the first time since 2007. His success on the field has him in contention for the NFL’s Offensive Rookie of the Year award.

With the Browns winning and having success, fans are starting to become more vocal on social media and are showing their support for their team once again. Thanks to Mayfield, other NFL fan bases are no longer mocking the Browns. Instead, there are some that believe the Browns are now ‘America’s team.’

Almost one year ago, Browns fans were even piling on the failures of the Browns. Instead of being silent and not doing anything about the team’s failures, fans were having an 0-16 parade outside of the stadium in protest of the organization and their failure to build a winning team.

However, even with the success on the field this season, FirstEnergy Stadium has not always filled to capacity this season. That irked the Browns franchise quarterback, who requested Browns fans to show their support and show up to the 2018 home finale against the Cincinnati Bengals.

And Browns fans did just that, as the Browns announced on Thursday that the game was sold out, with Mayfield making the announcement. And fans are not trying to sell their tickets, either, as most secondary ticket markets have the cheapest tickets for the game above 100 dollars, a rarity for a December Browns game.

It is extremely unlikely that the game would have been a sell out if it were not for Mayfield calling out the fans. In just eight months in one of the most devoted football towns in the country, Mayfield already has an entire fan base listening to his every word – and he is still a rookie.

The Cleveland Browns fan base has been waiting for someone that they can rally around. Mayfield understands the devotion of the Browns fan base, noting in an interview with NFL Network’s Chris Rose before the Broncos game how Cleveland is a football town.

Mayfield is not only gathering accomplishments on the field, but he has done a lot of great things for the community also. Whether it be partnering with Barstool Sports to raise money for the Ohio Special Olympics, helping the Browns raise money for families in crisis, or being a Secret Santa for a Cleveland neighborhood, Mayfield does whatever he can to bring joy to the local communities.

Mayfield has already changed the culture of the Cleveland Browns organization. He is already doing whatever he can to help out the community. The Browns fan base is already embracing Mayfield, and he has become the next superstar that is going to change the city for the better.
