Stud: Olivier Vernon

Olivier Vernon has been a controversial player in Cleveland because he has not been a game-wrecker some anticipated he would be. However, Vernon is fundamentally sound and does the little things that are not seen on a box score. But no matter the case, Vernon satisfied both aspects against the Patriots.

Vernon once again was solid in run support, setting the edge and maintaining his gap priorities. But he also was making plays all over the field and was getting after Tom Brady. Vernon finished the game with six total tackles, including one sack, two tackles for loss, and one quarterback hit.

The Patriots did well limiting the Browns defensive line and not letting much pressure get to Brady. However, Vernon seemed to be the one Browns defender who managed to get in the backfield often.

Vernon provides a consistent performer on the defensive line, even if he is not always finishing plays with sacks. He is not going to put himself out of position to make plays and can help other defenders make plays.

Over the past several games, Vernon’s play is starting to stand out. He is becoming a vital member of Cleveland’s defense and is starting to make more plays that can swing the momentum Cleveland’s way.
