The Cleveland Browns are working their way through training camp, and everyone in Ohio is learning more about new head coach Todd Monken. Since taking over the job, Monken has won over fans, media members, and players, with his straightforward approach.
The first-year head coach leads with a palpable passion, and that’s evident in his tough practices. However, Monken’s coaching style as a teacher has also been noticed in his early days as Cleveland’s head coach. He’s very hands-on with multiple positions on the offensive side of the ball, and direct about how he wants players to do things.
This style has earned Monken a comparison to one of the best coaches in the NFL. Browns’ color commentator Nathan Zegura recently appeared on 92.3 The Fan, and he explained that Monken’s coaching style is a lot like Kyle Shanahan’s, the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers.
"[Monken] is a teacher. And he works very closely with the quarterbacks and he works very closely with the wide receivers. And he is very specific… It reminds me of Kyle Shanahan. I haven’t seen somebody with that level of specificity and attention to detail and demanding, rigorous commitment to getting it exactly right, since Kyle Shanahan was here."

Shanahan served as Cleveland’s offensive coordinator in 2014, before infamously compiling a 32-page document on why he should be released from his contract. The Browns ultimately let him leave, and Shanahan went on to serve as the Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator, helping them reach the Super Bowl, before eventually becoming the head coach in San Francisco.
With the 49ers, Shanahan has been one of the league’s most successful coaches, and has led a consistently productive offense. Browns fans are hoping that Monken can lead Cleveland to the same kind of success.
Of course, only time will tell, but his tenure is off to a really promising start. The Browns already have what should be an elite defense, and the offense has several promising young playmakers. The biggest remaining question is the one Cleveland has been trying to answer for decades: Who will be the quarterback?
With Monken leading the way, the Browns should be able to find a quarterback, and success.
