When the Cleveland Browns take the field on Sunday for their second meeting with the Pittsburgh Steelers, they will do so as a 5-2 team that’s currently in first place in a loaded AFC North.
It’s fair to say not many people saw this coming for a Browns team that won five games in the entire 2025 season.
However, a new head coach in Todd Monken and a roster full of young, talented players have Cleveland rolling to start the season. Of course, the goal now is for the Browns to keep things up and show that their start to the season wasn’t a fluke. As the team tries to do that, Cleveland will be facing a different set of circumstances than it did to start the year.
Those circumstances are expectations — and those could change things for better or worse.
Browns must now deal with the pressure of expectations after surprising start
When Cleveland started the year, it was still being viewed as a joke of the league. Fans and media members recognized that the Browns had some exciting young talent, but they weren’t expecting them to lead the team to wins so quickly.
Now, with the entire team playing better than expected, the narrative around Cleveland has shifted.
Veteran quarterback Deshaun Watson is being discussed as the Comeback Player of the Year, the Browns are viewed as a possible playoff team, and people are actually picking them to win games. While it’s great that Cleveland has quickly changed its narrative, it must now conquer this new challenge of handling praise and expectations.
It’s one thing to be able to play free as an unsuspecting team, but things could change once people start to pay attention. How does a team handle praise and expectations? Will the praise get to the players’ heads? Will the expectations become too heavy?
Additionally, the Browns won’t be catching any of its opponents off guard, as opposing teams won’t be overlooking them. Will that matter in any of Cleveland’s upcoming games? Only time will tell.
Either way, this is the next step in the Browns’ maturation process. In order for them to go from a laughingstock to a fun young team to a serious contender, the Browns must be able to handle their newfound praise and expectations.
