Mike Shanahan: the Next Head Coach of the Browns?
Dig on that headline. Sit on it for a second. Sip on it. How does it feel? It could be a possibility. According to sources, the Browns are seeking to interview the ex-Broncos coach. It would be ridiculous not to seek an interview with Mike Shanahan to at least gauge his feelings toward coaching Cleveland. I like Shanahan for his experience and strong personality that demands respect. However, his record with the Broncos since John Elway retired hasn’t been stellar. He does know how to get the most out of an offense – the Broncos were a 1,000 yard running [...]
Lerner Wasting No Time on Nabbing Pioli
According to Adam Schefter’s blog on NFL.com, the Browns are looking to get an answer from Scott Pioli as early as today. Happy New Year, Mr. Pioli! Should you accept the GM position of the Cleveland Browns, you get the opportunity to make 2009 your most prolific, or self-punch-to-the-face-inducing, year of your life. Congratulations on getting the chance to turn around one of the most backwards organizations in the entire league. You will be met with plenty of scrutiny and harsh fan ridicule on a regular basis if you do not meet the somtimes ridiculous expectations of Browns fans. Should [...]
Wednesday Afternoon Links: New Year’s Edition
Hope your New Year’s Eve is going to be filled with plenty of fun and, if you just so happen to be of the consenting age, a responsible amount of booze. Before you begin the festivities, here are some links for your perusing: Another name in the Browns coaching sweepstakes is Iowa’s coach Kirk Ferentz. Because college coaches have done superb in the NFL lately. The Super Bowls among Nick Saban, Steve Spurrier, and Butch Davis are too many to count. Luckily, Ferentz shows little to no interest in coaching in the NFL. Don’t count on ex-Broncos coach Mike Shanahan [...]
The Browns are very eager to interview former New York Jets head coach Eric Mangini as he is going to be a hot commodity around the league. The more I think about it, the more I like the idea of Mangini being the head coach in Cleveland. Some may wonder why Randy Lerner is looking at at hiring a coach before a GM is even in place, but I think I understand what’s going on. Both Eric Mangini and Scott Pioli (whom I talked about in the last post) are familiar with each other, having worked with each other in [...]
Players Say Goodbye to Crennel; Former Coach Staying On?
As you may or may not know, LB D’Qwell Jackson has a blog over a Yardbarker. In his most recent post, he sends former head coach Romeo Crennel his best wishes and will always “be in his corner.” He, and the rest of the team, seems to have really respected the man and it really is unfortunate the team could not have performed better for Crennel. But, keep in mind, there was talk this season of players “quitting,” so changes had to be made. It’s always interesting to get the players’ perspectives, so I would suggest checking it out. – [...]
No Surprise Here: Romeo Crennel Fired
The nightmare season has finally come to a close, and you thought the Browns wouldn’t make history this year, that it would just be another ho-hum season of futility. Not so fast! These 2008 Browns are in the record books, never to be forgotten. After yesterday’s 31-0 beatdown at the hands of their “rival,” the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Browns were able to end the season without scoring an offensive touchdown in six straight games – an NFL record! It is no surprise then that the Browns promptly fired coach Romeo Crennel this morning. With a 24-40 record, Crennel was never [...]
Browns – Bengals: the Real Battle of the Titans
First of all, I know I said there would be news about a Browns-related contest on here. That is true, we will be having a contest on here, but it will be happening later than I originally thought. Right after I finished that post, I got an e-mail saying the products we will be giving away aren’t in yet. It will be a little bit, but we’ll have a contest on here – promise. With that out of the way, think about the epic match-ups taking place on Sunday – Steelers vs. Titans, Giants vs. Panthers, and, most importantly, Browns [...]
Quick, name the college that Braylon Edwards attended! It might have taken you a few seconds to remember, which begs the question: who cares? Apparently, the Browns wide receiver thinks the fans do. In this Plain Dealer article, Edwards is quoted as saying: “It is what it is … I’ve learned since being here that I’m very unappreciated. Not by the organization, just in the eyes of the fans and the city. Since Day One, I’ve been a marked man coming from Michigan. It’s just gone that way.” Seriously? The reason no one likes you right now, Braylon, is because [...]
Two Brownies Pro Bowl Bound
In this nightmare season, where the Browns get demolished on a weekly basis like an expansion team full of 31 other teams’ rejects, there does appear to be two bright spots – OT Joe Thomas and DT Shaun Rogers. The two were picked to represent the AFC at the 2009 Pro Bowl. Thomas has been solid on the line and Rogers has been a force up the middle. And, in typical Browns fashion, they somehow have gotten worse defensively, even with a truly great lineman in Rogers. It is infuriating at every turn when trying to figure out this team, [...]
Phil Dawson’s Great Season Just Business As Usual
Simply put, Phil Dawson is the man. Last year, I purchased a Braylon Edwards jersey because he is a playmaker (or was), and I figured he would be the guy to wear because he was about to be a Pro Bowler and would most certainly be with the team for some time. Yet I somehow forgot to mention the workhorse, the only guy still with the team since the 1999 expansion, and the only guy scoring points for the Browns in the last three games. Sure, the Plain Dealer ran a good piece about him as a potential Pro Bowler [...]
