Now that the Cleveland Browns have locked up left tackle Joe Thomas with a seven-year extension, the team will turn its attention to signing other core players. Running back Peyton Hillis would appear to be the next in line to receive a new deal, as he is entering the final year of his rookie contract that will allow him to earn the four-year minimum of $555,000. But is signing Hillis to a long-term deal the right move for the Browns to make? With just one solid season under his belt – a season in which he ran for 1,177 yards with [...]
Last week the Browns made a bang, resigning left tackle Joe Thomas to a seven-year, $84 million deal, essentially ensuring that Thomas plays for one team his entire career. Then came the reports yesterday, that the Browns may not be done yet. That’s right, Madden NFL 12 cover boy, running back Peyton Hillis, could very well be the next Brown to receive a long-term contract. Hillis is entering the final year of his rookie contract, which is set to pay him $550,000, the minimum for a fourth-year player.
The Cleveland Browns officially ended starting left guard Eric Steinbach’s season yesterday by placing him on the Injured Reserve list. He was entering his fifth year with the team after signing as a free agent in 2007. Steinbach had missed a total of two games with the Browns until now, and was named a pro-bowl alternate for the 2008 season. The Browns newly minted franchise player, left tackle Joe Thomas, has not played next to another guard his entire career. Now one of the Browns’ strengths is supposedly becoming a question mark. ?? OK, I understand the loss of Eric [...]
As reported earlier, left guard Eric Steinbach was placed on the IR after undergoing surgery to repair a disc problem in his back. That got me thinking. Steinbach will be 32 before he plays again in the NFL, not to mention he will be coming off some serious back surgery to boot. Before we go further, let me just lay to rest any notion that I want Steinbach out, as that couldn’t be further from the truth. The guy is a pro at what he does, and has no doubt provided both Joe Thomas and Alex Mack with a wealth of [...]
Update, 4:00 p.m.: The Browns have officially placed Steinbach on IR for the season. After much deliberation, Cleveland Browns left guard Eric Steinbach is finally undergoing surgery to correct the disc problem in his back. This most likely will end the starting guard’s 2011 season, which means the Browns will have to put him on the Injured Reserve list by 4 p.m. today. That would open a spot on the roster for the recently-acquired offensive lineman Oniel Cousins, who the Browns claimed off waivers from the Baltimore Ravens on Monday. This also opens the door for rookie lineman Jason Pinkston, who will [...]
In a move that possibly signifies the end of left guard Eric Steinbach’s season, the Cleveland Browns were awarded offensive lineman Oniel Cousins off waivers from the Baltimore Ravens on Monday. Cousins, 27, is going into his fourth season in the NFL and has experience at both the tackle and guard positions. He was the starting right tackle for the Ravens before being moved to right guard until, finally, he was demoted and released. Regardless of how he ended his time in Baltimore, he’ll provide some much needed depth along the offensive line. A move like this could potentially mean that [...]
Yesterday, I was back on Sports Buzz (part of The Pulse Network) to talk about the Cleveland Browns with host Tyler Pyburn. This time around, we discussed the recent cuts on the Browns roster, the maturation of quarterback Colt McCoy, how the team is dealing with so many injuries, and a few key position battles among players fighting to make the final 53-man roster. Be sure to check out the segment below:
Wide receivers Mohammed Massaquoi and Carlton Mitchell both returned to the practice field at the Browns’ facility in Berea on Sunday. Mitchell has missed two weeks with a finger injury, while Massaquoi’s well-documented absence has encompassed all workouts since the end of the lockout in late July. Seeing reports of these two young pass catchers back in action begs a poignant question: What will the roles of the receiving corps be when Pat Shurmur‘s offense settles in? Through three preseason games Greg Little has seen the lion’s share of targets as the coaching staff works to get him as much game [...]
The football season is quickly approaching, and I don’t just mean the NFL. College football is gearing up for Week One, and with college football inevitably comes draft talk. It is never too early to identify areas on the Browns that will need new players and youth, and with that in mind here are some top college players to watch this season. These are players that, for one reason or another, have a very solid chance of playing in brown and orange in 2012.
The Cleveland Browns waived eight players on Sunday in order to trim their roster down to 80, as the movement towards the final 53-man roster begins this coming weekend. The eight players released by the Browns were quarterback Troy Weatherhead, wide receiver Johnathan Haggerty, defensive lineman Kyle Anderson, defensive lineman Jabari Fletcher, safety Brett Johnson, wide receiver Juan Nunez, kicker Jeff Wolfert, and cornerback Darian Hagan.
